40 Below Ink is an independent press committed to publishing authentic books about Alaska by Alaskan writers.
The idea for 40 Below Ink grew out of our desire to create an outlet for uniquely Alaskan stories and from our frustration at the plethora of New York City/Hollywood distortions about life in Alaska - something we planned on changing. Beyond that, we knew our company had to work from a framework of social responsibility and a commitment to our community.
We decided we couldn't go wrong in our goal to be a cross between Ben and Jerry's and Harley Davidson (and we're not talking Cherry Garcia motorcycles here) in these important ways:
These four key values are at the heart of every decision we make at 40 Below Ink, 24/7.
This has been an exciting year for 40 Below Ink. We received an award from the Alaska Federation of Natives and Alaska Marketplace for new businesses in Alaska.
We created an advisory committee of outstanding Alaskan writers to help with the process of selecting manuscripts for publication. (See link above for more information on these authors.)
Currently we are accepting submissions from Alaskan writers of fiction and non-fiction and from illustrators for cover designs, for publication in 2008.
We are interested in honest versions of life in Alaska, in what makes us who we are. We are looking for works that are smart, current, authentic, on-the-edge, cutting-edge, humorous, wildly opinionated, adventurous, wise, romantic - well, absolutely any aspect of what it means to be Alaskan.
If you would like to share your story, please click on the submissions link at the top of this page to learn more.
Thank you for visiting 40 Below Ink. We look forward to hearing from you.
